A Borderline Childhood

A slideshow of photography documenting the lives of Burmese migrant children along the Thailand-Burma Border. I was invited to speak on a panel at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Thailand, concerning the rights of Burmese migrants in Thailand. At the time I was in Australia and could not attend so this slideshow was forwarded in my stead. Given the ‘expert’ status of the other speakers on the panel - Dr Cynthia Maung and representatives from the BBC and the International Labour Organization - I felt the best that I could contribute was a personalized account of how and why I had come to document the situation for children on the Thailand-Burma border. I would note that included in this slideshow are some images from the Labour Rights Protection Network, Thailand as well as from friend and colleague John Hulme who has spent many years photographing the situation for Burmese migrants http://www.johnhulme.net With regard to my own documentation, the body of photography received international recognition winning an award for feature photojournalism at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Thailand as well as a commendation for feature photojournalism at the Prix 3 French International Photography Awards.
